Words of Adventure

DEEP STEAL

Behind the scenes

Coming up with a hero is always a challenge. They have to be original, interesting, and fit the world and stories you are trying to tell.

You often hear, ‘write what you know.’ That, of course, doesn’t mean you have to be a killer to write about murder, but instead, to draw upon your life experience to help describe and create the world of your novel from your own unique perspective.

The hero of John McCready is different to many you will find in thrillers these days. He doesn’t come from a military or law-enforcement background, but being a professional diver he is used to stressful situations and working with high-tech equipment where your life depends upon your knowledge, skills and nerve. He also has to be able to think on his feet, and often, out of the box. All great qualities to have when putting a character in ever-increasing peril and situations beyond their control.

In developing McCready I have drawn extensively from my own background. Since learning to dive in 1976 I have been privileged to do thousands of dives around the world, both professionally and for the sheer fun of it.

This experience has helped to create a series of thrilling adventures centered around a hero who inhabits a world of danger, drama and suspense.

I hope you enjoy the ride!
